Problem Statement/overview of the need

Lily Mae is a little girl that loves to be in the kitchen with her mom, and is in need of a kitchen playset that is sized for her to keep her out of the kitchen, and to encourage her to stand and extend. Our goal is to design a safe and engaging kitchen set that she will have fun playing with.

Design Specifications

  • 2.5-3 feet tall
  • 3.5-4 feet, total length
  • Depth unimportant
  • Needs to make kitchen sounds, running water, etc.
  • Have things a normal kitchen has, oven with sliding racks, microwave, etc.
  • Loves cabinets, needs to have cabinets with different types of latches
  • Wall plug in for electronic components

Background research

1. Kitchen playsets already exist

Kitchen.png

2. Availability

  • There are numerous kitchen playsets available online and in stores

3. Gaps in Existing Products

  • Most are not tall enough or deep enough to make children have to stretch to reach things
  • Does not have variety of latches/sounds/activities that family is looking for
  • Does not plug into wall, instead runs on batteries

Conceptual Design

Design Concept 1

Description:

  • Simple and compact kitchen set featuring stove, sink, oven, fridge, dishwasher, microwave, and cupboards

Design Concept 2

Description:

  • Design allows for playset to be put into a corner to maximize space. Design features ovens, drawers, cabinets, sink, stove, dishwasher, fridge and freezer, and microwave.

Design Concept 3

Description:

  • Modular, folding frame, featuring a oven, range, microwave, speaker, sink, cabinets, and drawers.

Evaluate concepts/select candidate

Decision Process: We chose design number 3. It includes most of the wants, is average on cost, is very safe, nice and compact, and buildable.

Detailed Design

Description of selected design

We chose design number three originally, but based on feedback from multiple people, including the family and the physical therapist we came up with a new design that was a hybrid of design two and three. The new design allows the playset to be put in the corner for maximum space, and has a detachable counter that can be pushed back up against the wall or put on top of the playset. With the counter in place it is a u-shape that allows her to support herself from multiple sides and has handrails to pull herself up and balance. It features an oven, microwave, range, sink, cabinets, and hooks to hang things on. It also includes electrical components of lights and sounds to provide additional stimulation.

Analysis

Engineering analysis 1

Engineering analysis one evaluates the total weight of the kitchen set Analysis1.JPG

Engineering analysis 2

Engineering analysis two considers the maximum stress allowed in the handrail.

Engineering analysis 3

Engineering analysis three is concerning the electrical components of the kitchen playset
