Abstract

Our EIME family has requested a swing for their young child with hydrocephalus. The swing needs to hold medical devices, recline to give room for growth, detach to take in out of the weather, and swing next to his siblings safely.

Problem Statement/overview of the need

We are building a swing for an early toddler named Ethan. Ethan has a medical condition called hydrocephalus. His condition requires him to have help breathing using sophisticated medical equipment. Requiring this equipment all the time makes it difficult for Ethan to live an active lifestyle as he grows. The vision of Ethan's family is to be able to see him along with his siblings safely swinging together in the backyard without worry or inconvenience due to the medical equipment. The swing needs to be able to hold his medical device(s) and accompanying tubes safely and securely while swinging next to his siblings. In addition family would love for the swing seat to have some type of reclining mechanism take pressure off of Ethan's body while he swings. Lastly, the family requested that the seat be detachable so that they can bring it inside out of the weather.

Design Specifications

The family needs a 3 person swing set constructed with 2 retail swings on the sides and a custom swing for Ethan in the middle. The swing must hold his medical device(s) and accompanying tubes safely and securely. The swing seat must be detachable so that they can bring it inside out of the weather. The swing seat must have some type of reclining mechanism take pressure off of Ethan's body while he swings. The swing seat must be light and easy to handle.

The dimensions of the medical device, height, width, depth: 11",15",7". Rounded to the nearest whole number. It weighs 13 lbs.

Swing set dimensions: 104"L x 92" W x 82"H.

Car seat dimensions: 20" L x 21.5" W x 24" H.

Background research

1. What exists already, similar products 2. availability 3. identify gaps in existing products or technology to be addressed Car seat choices:

-Evenflo (Everystage DLX All-in-one, rear-facing, convertible and booster seat, grows with child to 120 lbs)

-Graco Slimfit (3 in 1 convertible car seat, infant to toddler) -Safety 1st (grow and go, all-in-one convertible car seat)

-Graco Extend2Fit (3-in-1 convertible car seat, grows with child 0-4 years)

-Evenflo Chase Plus (relatively cheaper, 2-in-1 convertible car seat, grows with child 22-120 lbs)

- The Graco® Recline N' Ride™ 3-in-1 Car Seat featuring On the Go Recline is the only car seat that can recline without uninstalling.* The unique On the Go Recline adjusts with one hand without uninstalling or disturbing baby. In addition, this seat grows with your child from 5-100 lbs.

Conceptual Design

Summarize your conceptual design process. Develop at least three concepts.

Design Concept 1

In this design, the swing set has three seats where the middle seat
would hold the detachable medical device for Ethan

Design Concept 2

Design Concept 3

This is primarily a light weight alternative to design 1
