Abstract

The child is in need for a play area to stimulate muscle growth and encourage movement in a safe, low stimuli environment outside of his scheduled physical therapy. The child was born prematurely with several physical abnormalities and lags behind in child milestones due to this. This play area needs to be able to help the child learn to better navigate different obstacles. Strengthening the neck by looking around, the legs by encouraging walking, and the arms by having handholds to grab onto. An additional restriction on the construction of the set is the child's struggle with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This requires the construction not provide an overwhelming level of stimuli, such as the material being too coarse.

Problem Statement/overview of the need

Our client is a family with a 1 year old child who was born prematurely. The family is looking for a play area that will help further his development as he grows older. The therapist has asked us to design an area that he can begin to crawl around on. They have asked for stairs, a slide, and sensory materials on the play area.

Design Specifications

1. The playset has to be optimized to provide as many different positions for the child's therapy sessions. 2. The playset can break apart into modules for easier storage. 3. The playset should be sturdy enough to support the child's weight but soft enough to prevent injuries if the child stumbles onto it. 4. The playset should be covered with material that does not provide an overwhelming level of stimuli. 5. The playset will be lightweight.

Background research

  • There are several similar products on the market; however, our group is hoping to create a similar, but original, design.
  • These products are readily available on Amazon.
  • The Nugget Couch is similar product

Conceptual Design

Summarize your conceptual design process. Develop at least three concepts.

Design Concept 1

  • This design is relatively inexpensive, and it meets the required criteria for this project. It is also relatively easy to construct.

  • Depending on the construction material for this design, it will perform adequately. The most effective, but also the most expensive design, would involve the following: a metal framed transportation cart and reinforced foam blocks with internal wooden frames.

Design Concept 3

Design Concept 4

This design is focused on possible configurations that could accommodate for the child's growth and progress. A variety of materials could potentially make this design more price efficient. Dimensions for the design have yet to be considered.

Design 4 5 8 6 19

The categories listed above are rated on a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being the favorable end of the scale.

After reviewing the data, we have decided that the best final design would be a merged design of the options listed above. This would take and combine the best aspects of each individual design.
